Handing Out Change
Published in 1994, Handing Out Change is a journey of extremes with a gentle man.
Frank Cooney, the author, describes being without work during the Great Depression and the shame, desperation and, sometimes, anger that was part of daily life.
Turning 14 he immediately left school to find work, as so many others did at that time, to help support the whole family.
He wasn't too proud to turn his hand to anything available and this he did. The variety of jobs saw him educated in areas never touched on in school and he, again like many others his age, matured beyond his years.
Frank takes us with him as he retells being an actor, a swaggie, working with explosives, training as a tram driver and his years as a conductor, all with the humourous and faithful way he has of regarding life.
