Mail For The Back Of Beyond
First published in 1986, this book highlights the early drivers of the isolated tracks of Oz.
John Maddock, the author, was an editor of a national magazine, "Truck & Bus Transportation", for 26 years and he knows his onions when it comes to interviewing the now retired mechanical transport pioneers of Australia's lonely outback.
The adventures these drivers experienced were all in a day's work, like being bogged for several weeks, having to construct new engine parts from a 44 gallon drum in the desert, dealing with 50 degree C first thing in the morning, every morning - these were not considered as anything out of the ordinary but were shrugged off as part and parcel of the job.
