The Fern Tattoo

The Fern Tattoo by David Brooks is a fabulous tale that meanders through many short stories and entices you in further with each sentence.
Set in Australia it is written in the fashion of a man, Benedict Waters, discovering the truth about his family tree from a distance after his mother's death and is related to the reader in the voice of the eccentric elderly woman who imparts these short stories each time Benedict visits her and her equally strange companion, Sim.
Not to spoil the tale Benedict makes several discoveries along the way with the reader, hindsight and scrabbling back through the pages pieces everything together with a gentle denouement gathering all the loose ends into a final, almost bitter-sweet summary that leaves you satisfied yet wishing for more.
